I literally have tens of thousands of dollars in top-shelf hardware, looking to repurpose some before selling on eBay to build a NAS system, possibly a dedicated firewall device as well. o_O
Q1) What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.** A1) This will be a dedicated NAS system for my home network. As such, I'm looking to have it: - Host ##TB's of 720, 1080 & up resolution Movies and TV Shows I'm about to begin ripping from a MASSIVE DVD & Blueray collection I have. - My kids are big on Minecraft. I understand it's possible to host your own "worlds" (or whatever they call the maps you can build) on your own "server". I think it would be pretty neat to offer them (& their friends - if can be done 'safely/securely') their own partition on one of my NAS HDD's. - I also have accounts with a couple diff VPN companies... I understand it's possible (?) to sync said VPN's with a NAS, this might be a more relative topic on the next point/purpose... - I'd like to be able to remotely link to this NAS for when I travel overseas and want to stream at my temp location from my house/this NAS. ______________________ Q2) What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?** * A2) Here's where I make matters more complicated than most others would... I've been an advocate for Bitcoin and crypto-currencies in general since 2013. I invested in a small mining outfit back in 2014 (strictly Bitcoin/ASIC's). One of my buddies is the President of a large-scale mining operation (foreign and domestic) and he convinced me to dabble in the GPU mining-space. I made my first hardware purchase in Q4, 2017 and launched a small-scale GPU-Farm in my house since then. I had the rigs mining up until Q3 of 2018 (not cost-efficient to keep on, especially living in SoFlo) and since then, the hardware's been collecting dust (& pissing off my family members since they lost access to 3X rooms in the house - I won't let anyone go near my gear). One of my New Years Resolutions for 2019 was to clear out the house of all my mining equipment so that's all about to go up on eBay. So "budget" is relative to whatever I "MUST" spend if I can't repurpose any of the parts I already have on hand for this build... RAID seems like a logical application here as well. - This will predominantly be receiving commands from MacOS computers. I don't think that matters really but figured it couldn't hurt to let you guys know.\* - I'd also be quite fond of implementing "PFSENSE" (or something of that caliber) applied to this system so I could give my Netgear Nighthawks less stress in that arena, plus my limited understanding of PFSENSE is that it's ability to act as a firewall runs circles around anything that comes with consumer-grade Wi-Fi routers (like my Nighthawks). Just the same, I'm open to building a second rig just for the firewall.\* - Another desirable feature would be that it draws as little electricity from the wall as possible. Even taking into consideration how much (more) I spent in electricity from keeping my house at a constant, cool 70-72F year-round (via my Nest thermostat). Even without the rigs, I keep my AC @ 70 when I'm home and for the last 1.5-2 years, I just so happened to spend 85% of my time here at my house. When I would travel, I'd keep it at 72 for my wife & kids. Additionally; I had each GPU 'custom' oveunderclocke'd (MSI Afterburner for all GPU's but the EVGA's).* I doubt everyone reading this is aware so this is for those that don't.... EVGA had the brilliant idea of implementing what they call "ICX technology" in their latest NVIDIA GTX GPU's. The short(est) explanation of this "feature" goes as follows: EVGA GPU's w/ "ICX 9 & above" have EXTRA HEAT/THERMAL SENSORS. Unlike every other GTX 1070 ti on the market, the one's with this feature actually have each of 2/2 on-board fans connected to individual thermal sensors. Which means - if you were to use the MSI Afterburner program on one of these EVGA's and create a custom fan curve for it, you'd only be able to get 1/2 of the fans to function the way intended. The other fan simply would not engage as the MSI Afterburner software wasn't designed/coded to recognize/ communicate with an added sensor (let alone sensor'S). This, in-turn, would likely result in whoever's using it the unintended way having a GPU defect on them within the first few months I'd imagine... Perhaps if they had the TDP power settings dumbed down as much as I did (60-63%), they might get a year or two out of it since it wouldn't run as near as hot, but I doubt any longer than that since cutting off 50% of the cooling system on one of these can't be ignored too long, surely capacitors would start to blow and who knows what else... (Warning = RANT) Another interesting side-note about the EVGA's and their "Precision-X" OveUnderclocking software is that it's designed to only recognize 4X GPU's on a single system. For miners, that's just not cool. My favorite builds had 8X and for the motherboards that weren't capable of maintaining stable sessions on 8, I set up with 6X. Only my EVGA Rigs had 3 or 4X GPU's dedicated to a single motherboard. Furthermore, and as stated in an earlier paragraph, (& this is just my opinion) = EVGA SOFTWARE SUCKS! Precision X wasn't friendly with every motherboard/CPU I threw at it and their extension software for the CLC Close-Loop-Cooling/ CPU water-coolers simply didn't work on anything, even integrating into their own Precision-X software. The amount of time it took me to finally find compatible matches with that stuff was beyond maddening. (END RANT). Which leads me to my other comments on the matter. That's what I had every single 1070 ti set at for TDP = 60-63%. Dropping the power load that much allowed me to bring down (on average) each 1070 ti to a constant 110-115W (mind you, this is only possible w/ "Titanium" rated PSU's, Platinum comes pretty damn close to the Titanium though) while mining Ethereum and was still able to maintain a bottom of 30 MH/s and a ceiling of 32 MH/s. Increasing the TDP to 80, 90, 100% or more only increased my hashrates (yields) negligibly, like 35-36 MH/s TOPS, which also meant each one was not only pulling 160-180W+ (Vs. the aforementioned 115'ish range), it also meant my rigs were creating a significantly greater amount of heat! Fortunately for the GPU's and my own personal habits, I live in South Florida where it's hot as balls typically, last winter was nothing like this one. Increasing my yields by 10-15% didn't justify increasing the heat production in my house by >30%, nor the added electricity costs from subjecting my AC handlers to that much of an extra work-load. For anyone reading this that doesn't know/understand what I'm talking about - after spending no less than 2-3 hours with each. and. every. one. I didn't play with the settings on just one and universally apply the settings to the rest. I found the 'prime' settings and documented them with a label-maker and notepad. Here's the math in a more transparent manner: *** I NEVER LET MY GPU's BREACH 61C, EVER. Only my 8X GPU rigs saw 60-61 & it was the ones I had in the center of the build (naturally). I have REALLY high power fans (used on BTC ASIC MINERS) that were sucking air from those GPU's which was the only way I was able to obtain such stellar results while mining with them. **\* Mining at "acceptable" heat temps (not acceptable to me, but most of the internet would disagree = 70C) and overclocking accordingly brings in X amount of yields per unit. = 'Tweaking' (underclocking) the GPU's to my parameters reduced my yield per unit from -10-15%, but it SAVED me well over 30-35% in direct electricity consumption, and an unknown amount of passive electricity consumption via creating approximately 20%+ less heat for my AC handler to combat. I say all this extra stuff not just for anyone interested in mining with their GPU's, but really to answer (in-depth) the apparent questions you people are asking me in PM's. Something else that should help justify my claims of being so conservative should be the fact I only have/used "Platinum and Titanium" rated PSU's. Heat production, power efficiency and longevity of the hardware were ALWAYS my top priority.* . I truly thought Crypto would continue to gain and/or recover and bounce back faster than it did. If this project had maintained positive income for 12 months+, I'd have expanded one of our sites to also cater to GPU mining on a gnarly scale. Once I have my NAS (& possibly 2nd rig for the firewall) successfully built, I'll be willing/able to entertain selling you guys some/all of the remaining hardware prior to launching on eBay. Hi all, In the process of building a mining rig. Before now I've never had more than 4 cards hooked up to a single motherboard. I'm trying to up the number to 8, and I read/found videos of people using 8 cards (with 8x powered "usb cable" risers and 2x m.2 to pciex4 boards) with this motherboard. So I install windows and the thing boots fine with any 2 of my GPU's (they are various NVIDIA 10 series.. some 1070s and some 1080 Ti's, mixed evga and MSI) plugged in, but as soon as I plug in 3 or more, the BIOS boot screen doesn't show properly and I just get a blinking underscore cursor on an otherwise blank screen. Also, the m.2 pcie adapters don't seem to function at all, no matter which or how many cards are plugged into the board. My BIOS settings are kosher, I think - made sure to enable the "above 4G remapping", set the m.2 slots to PCIE mode. Not sure if turning on VT-x & VT-d would have any effect, my hunch is no, but I tried it both ways. Most people seem to make their builds with AMD cards, but I have gone with NVIDIA - is there some reason that more than 4 NVIDIA cards would not work on a single motherboard when AMD would? Anyway, 1 ETH bounty to the person who solves my problem - 2 if it turns out to be anything seriously complicated or require real effort to help me - as I'm losing money on my investment right now. I'm pretty good with both software and hardware, so helping me troubleshoot shouldn't be a total pain. Or if there are known issues with this board and y'all think I should cut my losses and order a different motherboard, let me know. Ignoring the M.2 ports until I at least get 6 GPU's working - I was hoping a test of them would go positive, but for the purposes of keeping this simple lets aim for 6.
Some asked about my power-supply setup. I do actually have two supplies, and some risers are powered by a different supply than the one plugged into the motherboard. I tried changing this and nothing was different. I have also taken steps to ensure that both power supplies are ground-coupled on the DC side, which I think should be enough to avoid any issues involved with using more than a single power supply per rig.
Switched from "Auto" to "Gen1" in a few different places in the BIOS - this seems to have allowed me to go from 2 cards to 3 plugged in and functioning. It doesn't seem to matter which risers, or cards, or ports - as long as only 3 and no more are actually plugged into the motherboard itself, it boots and works as expected. If this is the most progress we make here, I'll make a donation to the address of anyone who suggested this change before I made this edit. The big bounty is still up for a real fix that gets me up to 6/8
New Problem & New Information!! Now, when I attempt to boot with 4 or more cards plugged in, (again, any 4 cards, any 4 risers, any 4 PCI-E ports) the following debug message comes up on the screen, after POST and before Windows starts its spinny logo: "BlInitializeLibrary failed 0xc00000bb" - any ideas here?
CLOSED: Y'all are going to kill me - looks like it was a BIOS version issue. I swear I updated the BIOS when I plugged in the boards, but looks like I was still a version out of date. I updated the BIOS to version "0808" and I've gotten up to 7 cards running successfully. I have a reason to believe the 8th card may be nonfunctional and so I think I have solved my motherboard issue. Also, for the record, all my ports are running in Gen2 not Gen1 and it seems to be working. When I verify that all 8 GPU's are running correctly, I'll fully document my build. Thanks to all who helped, I will be privately messaging the comments that finally spurred me to check the BIOS version and offering an ETH donation. Bitcoin Mining Profits: Crypto Mining Hardware or Cloud Mining Pools?
Can Cloud Mining Be More Profitable Than Getting Mining Hardware For Bitcoin? The process of crypto mining demands a lot of preparation, no matter which cryptocurrency you choose. Mining Bitcoin (BTC), however, requires even more. If you are a Bitcoin miner, or you at least researched the issue, you probably quickly realized that this is quite a difficult process. There a lot of aspects of the process that need to be considered, like the Proof-of-Work’s mining algorithm, fees, and hashing power. Not to mention the extremely expensive equipment that is necessary in order to do it. However, there is another option which may be more profitable, and that is cloud mining. But is it really the best way to go? Let us find out. Bitcoin Miningining: Hardware & Cost Let’s start with the necessary mining hardware. In order to mine Bitcoin, you cannot just use anything, and in order to get a quality device, you will have to prepare quite a sum in advance. Bitcoin mining hardware can cost from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars. The price largely depends on which crypto you wish to mine (in this case, Bitcoin), as well as how big of a mining operation you are planning. The cost of a mining rig depends on which one you want. You might go for an ASIC mining rig, or a GPU and CPU mining rigs. ASIC mining rig is usually far more expensive, and their hash rates are a lot faster. However, they are known for facing scrutiny due to the fact that you cannot repurpose them. Basically, if the hash algorithm of the blockchain changes, your ASIC rig will become pretty much useless, and you will have to acquire new gear. Obviously, this is the most expensive solution. GPU and CPU gear, on the other hand, can be re-purposed. The gear is also a lot cheaper, and much more acceptable than ASIC, which often finds a lot of resistance. This is why most miners choose to go for GPU and CPU instead of ASIC. Of course, there is always an option to have several mining rigs set up, in order to multiply your earnings. However, this means that you will have to acquire them first, which is probably the most expensive option. Even with several mining rigs working at the same time, it will probably take months before you can cover these initial costs via mining. Not to mention other factors, like the cost of an electric bill that is going to skyrocket as soon as you start your mining operation. The electricity cost varies depending on your location, which makes it hard to precisely calculate the cost of keeping the operation up and running. Cryptocurrency Cloud Mining Pools: Profitable or Not? Calculating the costs of cloud mining, on the other hand, is a much easier process. A lot of companies are using monthly subscriptions, with their cost being determined by the targeted crypto that the user wants to mine. Additionally, the cost of the model is also determined by the hash rate speeds. For example, taking a contract for 2 years of mining Ethereum with Genesis Mining can cost anywhere between $1,520 and $12,960, depending on the speed which can go from 40 MH/s to 360 MH/s. On the other hand, there is a website called HashFlare, which can provide you with a contract that lasts only one year, and it costs $1.80 for 100 KH/s. The fact is that cloud mining is expensive as well, and not that profitable at first. You will probably need more than a year to cover the cost of the initial investment. A lot of people don’t do their research properly, which is why they enter the process expecting to get rich in less than 6 months. This is, of course, never the case. Generally, cloud mining is not that profitable at all. Because of that, it is also not the popular way of crypto mining. Monthly subscriptions will always be there, but it won’t always be easy to pay them off. There are always the USB mining options but they are not very powerful. If you choose to go with the mining hardware, the costs will be upfront, and you will know what you are getting into. I'm thinking about sinking some major money into mining. Probably $15,000 to $20,000. Not all up front but sliding into it pretty quickly. I've got about three rigs up and running with ethereum but I have several issues I want input on. I am setting aside a $40 bounty for the three top answers ($20 for the top, two $10 for the runner ups) paid in bitcoins. I will be posting this in several places. Hello, I hope somebody knows what to do. I'm completely new to cryptocurrency mining, started today in the morning. I read some articles and saw online vids about ethereum wich totally caught my interest. As for now, I'm trying to get the ethminer to work but with no success. At first I started to download the Ethereum blockchain via geth, but while loading in the background I read more articles/forum posts, that it will take quite some time, even days in fact. Also I'm not sure about the size of the blockchain, but I also read that it's almost 60GB big in size and increasing steadily. That's why I deleted some games from my 120GB SSD, now I've around 50GB free space. So I loocked for alternatives and found parity, wich syncs WAY faster with the blockchain and you don't have to download it entireley. After some toying around with it, I think I actually got it set up right, it seems synced with the most recent blocks (#3934469) and I also got an address wich I can see in the parity browser interface. Also, I got ethminer (0.9.41-genoil-1.1.6-pre) running, but only to a certain point. Here is it how I do it atm: I open 2 command prompts, one for parity, one for ethminer. For parity I simply drag and drop the folder containing the .exe, actually erase „.exe“ and replace it then with „--author 0034468D471D2F1dD63aFDFbE12fbaC7e594a090 --chain homestead“ and press enter. It then works I guess, but I don't know for certain if the blockchain reward would go to my address. For ethminer I also drag and drop it into the command prompt, erase .exe and type „ -G“ and hit enter. It works at first, but I read the line „Allocating/mapping DAG buffer failed with: clCreateBuffer(-61). GPU can't allocate the DAG in a single chunk. Bailing“ followed by some lines saying „hh:mm:ss | main Mining on PoWash #0dee0fe5 : 0.00MH/s [A0+0:R0+0:F0]“ and ends with „Got work package: #bf3fe4af“ but it doesn't continue from there, while the parity command prompt just keeps running. I can't get any further than this for now. Most posts I can find regarding this issue are from 2016. I can't find a simple answer on how big the DAG is of TODAY, is it over 2GB? Can you even mine ether with a 2GB GPU? Are there actually better mining softwares than ethminer? I installed the newest driver version for my GPU and entered some stx gpu commands wich should set the usage to 100% or something wich I found in some articles regarding this issue. My specs, AMD A8-6600K CPU overclocked to 4,4MhZ, Radeon R7 200 GPU with 2GB memory size, 120GB SSD, windows 8.1. Also I've the onboard graphics turned off in the BIOS. I've also created an account on Kraken, where I planned to trade ether for euro. Are there currently other major cryptocoins I could mine with this rig? For now I'm too tired and probably will continue researching a bit more tomorrow, but I think mining Bitcoin for example wouldn't work for me with this rig aswell. On a sidenote, my android mobile wich I use for USB tethering so I've internet access on my PC is restarting by itself since I'm trying this all out, I swear I never experienced this problem before and I had intense gaming sessions with multiple hours before without it shutting down. So I'm considering my first mining rig, because I'd like to get into bitcoin (not for the big digibucks) and I wanted to check my reasoning with the this subreddit. I see a lot of disrespect for the Block Erupters, but the cost has come down a bit. Using this configuration, you get 3GH/s for about $1200 in GPU's. Not counting the rest of the build, that nets you 2.5MH/s per $1. Using USB Block Erupters, you get 330MH/s for (based on current exchange) $90.3. This works out to 3.6MH/s per $1. Doesn't it make sense to build a mining rig out of Block Erupters instead of a costlier GPU rig which sucks power and makes noise? EDIT: Added mining rig link.
My experience with Bitcoin: How I lost $5k and a potential profit for over $42k.
Happy Dec 1 everyone. I can't sleep tonight and I have something to get off my chest, so story time. I got into bitcoin soon after the crash in April. I was very interested in bitcoin and the way it worked and finally decided to buy when the price was around $105-$125 range. I spend $5k total and got around 42btc. That $5k was my life savings but I believed bitcoin was the future. At this time I was still working at my minimum wage job and barely getting by. I wanted a way out of my horrible existent. I wanted to go to school again but I was too worried about paying my bills or if I was going to make it the next month. I thought bitcoin was my way out. I was inspired by the stories of the people that "forgot" their wallet and all of a sudden they were tens or hundred-thousandaires. While I was doing research I stumbled upon the bitcoin forums bitcointalk.org. I thought about mining bitcoin but didn't have the hardware. I don't have an awesome rig that can and I couldn't afford the asic units that butterfly labs were selling away. After a few weeks I learned that butterfly labs were not to be trusted and asicminer announced they we selling the usb miners. At this time the general consensus was that mining will never be profitable but I bought some anyway with the plans of reselling it. I got into bitcoin stocks because of asicminer. I have a few shares at the time and eventually got more and reinvested the dividends into the 1/100 asicminer. At this time things were looking up. I had a usb miner hashing away and asic miner was going up in price. After a few weeks I sold my usb miners on ebay and got a good deal on it. I went over my breakeven point and had extra money. So I used the USD to buy more bitcoin with bitinstant. Bitinstant has a meltdown and didnt get my btc in time to reinvest in asicminer. The price shot up to 2.5btc a share and I missed out but it was ok. This is the high point of my life and experience with bitcoin. The dividends from asicminer was helping me pay some of my bills. I had a great investment going and I was richer than I had ever been. Bitcoin was my savior. Bitcoin was my answer. I got so excited about it I told my parents but they were disenchanted. I was met with "Why do you always daydream? Why can't you just go to school and get a real job? Imaginary money, fake money, scam." I'm not that smart so its hard for me to go to college but everyone keeps telling me you have to go to school to get a good job. Well the next month came and ebay hit me with a 10% fee for successfully selling my stuff. I didn't know about the fee so I was caught off guard and now my bank account is in the negative. I didn't eat for the next few days while I was waiting for my bitcoins to turn into USD and transfer to my account. I have been spending a lot of time lurking bitcointalk.org and there was news of these new start ups. BTCgarden and Labcoin. I was thinking I'll show my parents that I'm not daydreaming, I'm going to make it big and they won't be disappointed. So I sold all my asicminer shares and had around 90btc all together. I split between the two and when BTCgarden failed I dump the rest into Labcoin. Asicminer was falling in price at this time and I was glad I made it move. At the height of Labcoin I had over 150BTC. I thought I made it. I was happy. The next day burnside [stock exchange operator] announced he was going to close down his exchange and the price for everything plummeted. I didn't find out until a few days later when I was my stocks were worth 1/6 of what they worth. I was destroyed, I didn't know what to do and I was drinking the Labcoin cool-aid hard. I thought that its ok, the price will go back to IPO and I can sell. Months pass and I lost my job. I couldn't focus at work and I was really pissy. Now I'm sitting on useless Labcoin shares and joined with the group of people looking for a lawsuit, knowing full well I'll never get my money back. I lost my apartment last week and I had to go home with my parent (who are rubbing this shit in my face every chance they get. That is the reason why I moved out in the first place). I had the worst thanksgiving ever and I'm not looking forward for Christmas or the New Years. Its hard trying to find a job. I don't know what to do anymore. Its killing me that bitcoin is over $1k. If I had just kept it in my wallet and didn't touch it I would have over $40k now. Hindsight is a bitch. Thanks for listening. I hope you guys have a better time with bitcoin. TL;DR: This is not a bitcoin success story. Its a story about my highs and lows and ultimately my failure.
Two things: 1. Stop spreading FUD about ASICs and 2. Are too many exchanges a bad thing?
Hello shibes, I hope everyone is having a blessed day! It's sunny down here in NOLA and life is good. I just wanted to stop everybody before we get 1000 posts about ASICs. ASICs have had a long and rocky history whereby the consumer has been royally screwed many times, and the ASIC developer has taken their bitcoins and laughed all the way to the bank (unless they were using MtGox to store their bitcoins). Anyhow, any ASICs are projected to come out in Q2 or Q3 of 2014, a very optimistic and unrealistic date. To improve ASICs from their current 300kh/s per rig to 100mh/s per rig by then, in my opinion is laughable and expensive. Rewards will be much smaller by then at any rate, and that's if they come out. A big big IF. When they eventually come out, they will provide maturity and power savings to the network. Anybody who is currently buying graphics cards can instead invest the same amount of money into a USB ASIC which consumes less power and provides higher hashrate. Anybody who hasn't invested currently in graphics cards can hardly mine, and that position will not change. ASICs are coming either way, and the fact that we are recognized and targeted by them is a good thing, not a bad thing. It shows we are a mature network. Yes we can make algorithm changes and keep distancing ourselves from mainstream financial systems, but we want to move forward, and this is what progress takes. We will still most have an early adopter advantage, so I'm not complaining at all. Enough on ASICs. Que sera sera, and our community is too big to be killed by ASICs, so they will change things, but change can be good. Second point: at this stage in Dogecoin, I think too many exchanges are a bad thing. Maybe I'm jumping the gun because they both launched, but prelude and coinmkt have very low volumes, and frankly at this stage I don't think our market cap can support 30 exchanges. I don't know 100% what the solution is, but I'd like to hear some ideas about that. For now, I just want 1 good exchange for the US and canada, 1 for EU, and 1 for China. Anything above that just dilutes trading volume. Feel free to disagree with me, I'm just one shibe.
Hi! I've been using Bitcoins for a few months now for paying anonymously to online services. I'm now using it for a lot of stuff I was using PayPal before with and I'd like to know more about mining. I searched a lot about the subjects, found out about mining rigs, cloud mining services, etc. I read about rigs like Antminer, etc and I'd like to know more about it. I feel like every corner there's a new way to mine bitcoins and that most of them aren't very cost-efficient (buying better rigs to get more gh/s since the difficulty increases and your prior rig is now not efficient enough, etc). Feel free to point out if I'm wrong, I'm still learning! So here's a few questions:
1) Is there any cloud mining services that is really cost-efficient? It seems like every time I do the math, those has very high cost for very little output.
2) Are USB mining stick any good? (I smell a big nope)
3.a) What would be the current most cost/energy efficient rig to use?
3.b) How is it energy-wise/consumption? How much does it cost you per month to run for example?
4) How much BTC does somebody with a decent rig gets per month?

A few days ago, I was a bit bored (read: procrastinating), and I ended up reading about Bitcoin. For those of you unfamiliar with the topic, the gist is this: Bitcoin is a decentralized currency based entirely in cyberspace which is derived based on cryptographic hashes. The value is based on whatever value the market as a collective assigns to it, much like most modern currencies (USD, Euro, etc.). Transactions are enacted entirely over p2p systems, so it has useful applications ranging from legal online marketplace deals, to gray-area deals such as Wikileaks donations, to illicit activities on Silk Road, much like real world cash. This may be a long post but I wanted to get a few things off my chest. Some of you may not like what I'm saying but if that's the case at least take the time to discuss it rather than downvoting me. I think that's what communities on Reddit lack - discussion is how we progress and sometimes it feels like all Reddit does is downvote instead of actually talking up. Firstly - Bitcoin in the media. It's no big news that Bitcoin was synonymous with Silk Road and the Deep Web for a while. You couldn't have one without the other. This lead to a lot of negative press for Bitcoin itself. I think it was handled quiet well, we showed the majority of people that Bitcoin was useable in a mainstream setting but I don't think we did enough. How often do we see the good features of Bitcoins like:
Free / automatic fraud prevention. You can be sure that your payment won't be chargeback from fraudsters. *Very easy implementation with Coinbase and other merchants. Fees are very low compared to credit card processors.
Accept payments worldwide. Anyone who can download the client can make a payment.
Can be set up usually within 10 minutes.
How often do we see these features? I recently saw a sign in my local shop saying they couldn't accept credit card payments due to high fees. Imagine if they knew about Bitcoin, as long as they have a computer or even access to one they could attract a wider audience. I think we can do a lot more to give out a clearer message about Bitcoin. I think a lot of the fear comes from the fact that people don't understand it. If we spend more time educating then we can get a more positive image out there. Secondly - Miners, their profitability and other issues.
The next thing I'd like to bring up is the mining community. When people were using CPUs and GPUs to mine we all knew that there was very little chance of profit. BTC was no where near as popular as it is now and you could end up spending thousands on building a rig with hardly any chance of making profit - but people still did it for fun. It was a interesting concept how your computing time would make the network stronger and secure and in return you would be repaid in miner fees / generating blocks. Now it's all about profit. Yes, it's understandable that if you spend $5000 on a miner you want to make profit of it but people see it as a simple money in profit out scheme. That's now how you should see it. Your making an investement. If you look at ROI in terms of Bitcoin chances are you won't break even any time soon. This was the same with GPUs and it's the same with ASIC. However if you pay for something like a USB ASIC miner you shouldn't see it that way. You're paying a small amount for xGH/s (or MH/s) for a fraction of what it would actually cost you. When I brought my USB miner I spent about $20. If I were to buy that power with a GPU it'd cost me way more and even more to keep it running in terms of power costs. Another way of looking at it is if you were an early adopter. 50BTC rewards were nothing back in the day. If I hoarded all my coins and spend that 50BTC buying hardware it's not that bad because those 50BTC cost me nothing. Yes I could have sold it and gotten way more but if it means I'm securing hardware to mine even more coins to hoard then it could be very profitable. What if the hardware I brought mines me 25 coins now, I've done a good job imho.
Companies themselves have let us down with the exception of one or two. BFL fucked up. Avalon pretty much cheated the whole community. KNC Miner and ASICMiner are the only ones I know that kept the promises as close as they could. As an investor, investing in any of the miners with my USD wouldn't be very appealing to me. It's all shambles and I would prefer to invest my USD in buying BTC and holding it rather than buying mining software. To me it sounds like all the companies are interesting in selling during the gold rush. "During the gold rush, sell shovels." Which seems to apply to most of the companies these days.
Thirdly - exchanges and how they work.
A lot of people seem to give MTGox shit because of their processing time. What you have to understand is that whenever fiat is involved there are regulations. Bitcoin is still a touchy subject in the US. This makes it dangerous to anyone in govt. who doesn't understand it. Their system works though.
MTGox, BTC-e use something called an order book. Meaning BTC will only be worth what people are willing to pay for it. The highest bid price will raise the last price. Simple as that. It's good because it means they can't artificially raise the price..but it also means trading bots with the relevant APIs can change the price by making small orders. They take a small fee in BTC / USD which imho sounds fair.
LocalBitcoins is failing. People are charging premiums way above even Gox but only paying below Bitstamp to buy the coins. It's all about being greedy. LocalBitcoins used to be cheaper for a while but now it's just being ruined by greed. Unless travel costs are included, most people use just UK Bank Transfer which costs you NOTHING. You could charge a .10p fee each way, keep it at Bitstamp prices and easily attract more customers but people choose to be greedy.
Bitcoin for devs and merchants. I think a lot of work needs to be done for Bitcoin devs. Unlike other documentation, I found Bitcoin very hard to follow when it comes to dev. I understand the basics of coding and a few languages - not a much but enough to say make a web page or a automated program in C#. Imagine if you had Bitcoin dev dedicated websites like w3schools does for languages (I know w3 schools is a very bad benchmark but whatever). If more people understood how dev works then more people would attempt to get into it. I think a lot of work needs to be done within the BTC community itself before we even think of making it mainstream. Even if the last price reaches $1000 it's useless if people don't know as much as should do.

With that build, what are your thoughts on the 2x R9 280x's? I'm having trouble finding comparable benchmarks, other than this which only compares it to lower-scoring GPUs. I see them as providing a fair amount of number crunching capability (aka mining), as well as being still top-of-the-line graphics for gaming. I probably shouldn't concern myself with mining if I can get a better performance out of games with a single GPU for less $. I've never SLI'd or CF'd and everywhere I see it mentioned, I notice people have problems with it or that it doesn't always work. What should I know about multi-GPU setups? I notice a lot of budget builds use an AMD CPU. How much can I expect out of the 4770k over a similar AMD cpu like the FX-9590 or 8350 (a much cheaper one), aside from the marginal chance in benchmark scores? I could save getting a cheaper PSU probably. I live near a Microcenter. I'm guessing their prices are lower for pickups. Sorry for the long post. I hope it doesn't scare anyone off! So I have really liked the idea of VTC. I jumped on the bandwagon back in early March. I mined for a bit using a small (4) x 270 rig and I bought just a little back then. I then decided to just park my rig on clevermining for about a month...then got out of mining altogether and sold my rig. I used the proceeds to buy BTC and that's where Im at today. I have a nice little stash of BTC and 58.9 VTC. I liked VTC for one reason (at that time)...because I could mine it with my little GPUs not have to worry about ASIC's coming in anytime soon. So in my head that meant I could mine now and make more...and then if/when ASIC's ever do come...then the price will go up like it did for BTC and like it will for LTC! Hey /BitcoinBeginners, I come to you as a novice, eager to learn. I've been quite excited to somehow join the ranks of those who have embraced crypto-currencies. Not only does it hold a lot of promise for the future, but it seems like a very interesting endeavour. I've had a few barriers to entry (can't find a single reasonably priced 6950/6970), so I can't partake in a big way. However, I'd still like to try my hand at it in an educational manner. This is where my question comes in. I've got a Raspberry Pi lying around and I've found a guide to turn it into a simple and cheap mining rig. It's still in developtment and the developer is active, so it's far from dead. You may notice that it says "Blockchain too old" when you launched it and it has synchronized - don't worry about that, you can ignore this message. I think it may get fixed with the next client release. It also may take a few minutes to start. The wallet client will show your wallet address which is can be used to receive coins. This wallet address is always the same and only you have this address, there is no one out there with the same address! If you delete your wallet.dat file and restart your client you get a new address. But that's not needed because you can generate as much wallet addresses you like with 1 client and use it for sending & receiving. All of them are still stored in your wallet.dat file.
COOL, HOW DO I GET THESE COINS?
You have many different ways to get your hands on some CAP! 1) You can always mine them "solo" or within a "pool". Solo: You mine with your own GPU and/or CPU power and try your luck to find a so called "block". A block currently contains 10 CAP. If you find one, you get it instantly into your wallet! But you may expect days or weeks when you find nothing and get 0 CAP. This is where pools come into play! You can join a mining pool where many miners throw the power of their computers together to find blocks. If one of them finds one block the amount will be divided and given to all miners. So pool mining is the best choice because you always get CAP coins, no matter if you find a block or not. or 2) You can convert some amount that's cool for you of your USD/EUR to CAP on various different exchange websites! You also can convert some other crypto currency into CAP if you have one. (Bitcoin -> CAP or what you like)
WHEN I MINE MY REWARD IS JUMPING UP AND DOWN, WHY?
The more miners jump into mining these coins, the higher the difficulty to find blocks is getting. The higher the difficulty is getting, the lower will be the rewards you receive. Right now the difficulty is pretty good for newcomers, even those that don't have a big gaming rig with expensive graphics cards. It will jump higher over time, but that doesn't mean the currency is dead! The difficulty also regulates itself. If more miners stop mining this, the difficulty is going down.
WHO IS THE "BANK" THAT GIVES US ALL THESE COINS?
This is one of the greatest things with a crypto currency: There is no bank! Everyone that has the client ("wallet") acts as his own bank - isn't that a nice thing? You just need to backup your wallet.dat file which is located in /Username/AppData/Roaming/, there you will find a folder named BottlecapsCoin which holds the wallet.dat file. This file is where your Bottlecaps are sitting. Dropbox or a USB drive is great for a backup. If you lose the wallet file with a harddrive crash, your coins are also gone.
IS THIS SECURE AGAINST HACKERS?
The network itself is secure. You just need to make sure your PC isn't infected with loads of trojans and viruses which may steal your coins. You can also secure your wallet.dat file with a passphrase within the client.

The parts for my mining rig just arrived. But now I've got some more questions!
Hey, The parts for my mining rig just arrived! Yay! Its 2 R9 270's which I have estimated to give around 800-900kHs. My first question is: With such a hashrate - would I better off mining on p2p or in a traditional pool? And if so.. What pool do you recommend? I know most people just say that over time it balances out, but seeing as mining a block is completely random - I don't see how this is the case? Surely Having the confidence that you're going to get blocks frequently in a big pool is good? Also, I have a USB stick here - and I was going to use BAMT. Is this the best linux distro for mining? I've seen another one called SMOS that claims to be better but I don't have a clue. So should I just use BAMT? Finally.. In a few months when I'm literally a millionaire from mining coins ;) - a) What is the best way to store my bitcoins securely? Should I mine into an offline paper wallet b) I see Dogecoin as quite a volatile currency - perhaps even more so than bitcoin.. Does it make more sense to store the bulk of your crypto currency as bitcoin or dogecoin? Obviously theres no correct answer to this as nobody knows whats going to happen but I'd like to hear what other people do!
